B.C.’s Auditor General Act sets out our roles and responsibilities.
We are unable do any work that isn’t part of the act. Our work doesn’t involve anything related to disputes between individuals. We don’t audit local (municipal) government spending. We don’t review legal opinions or court decisions.
One of the other independent offices of the Legislative Assembly might be helpful for matters that are outside of our mandate:
- Elections BC administers provincial general elections and by-elections, and oversees provincial and local campaign financing and advertising.
- The Conflict of Interest Commissioner aims to ensure that MLAs do not use elected office to further their private interest and reviews allegations of conflicts of interest.
- The Human Rights Commissioner exists to address the root causes of inequality, discrimination and injustice in B.C. by shifting laws, policies, practices, and cultures.
- The Information and Privacy Commissioner provides independent oversight and enforcement of B.C.’s access and privacy laws.
- The Merit Commissioner makes sure appointments to and within the BC Public Service are fair and based on merit.
- The Ombudsperson investigates complaints from members of the public about the administration of government programs and services.
- The Police Complaint Commissioner provides ways to voice concerns about the conduct of municipal police officers or departments in British Columbia.
- The Representative for Children and Youth supports young people and their families in dealing with the provincial child and youth welfare system, provides oversight to this system, and makes recommendations to improve it.
