Ministry of Forests: Calculating Carbon Projections

Date: March 18, 2025

Our audit report looks at the Ministry of Forests, its commitment to climate change mitigation, and how the ministry knows if some of its forest management decisions have an impact on B.C.’s forest carbon balance.

Forest management can help mitigate climate change. It can enhance how forests – and forest products – absorb and store carbon. It can help reduce carbon emissions from forestry activities.

So, what does success look like? The ministry and the Office of the Chief Forester uses carbon modelling to understand how some of their decisions may change the forest carbon balance.

Because carbon modelling is so essential, our audit examined the methodology that the ministry uses.
